Heres how it is

I started this blog to practise my writing. I wasn't sure what I wanted to be and a journalist was one of the options. Now it's not really an option anymore. I did some research into the jobs I was considering and i've decided that writing really isn't for me. I wish it were, but everything I write is so mediocre.I'm like Scarlett Johansson in Lost In Translation. I think I can get that B in english but thats the extent of it. That said I do really like this blog and I want to keep going with it.I might start posting more pictures as that's what i'm trying to focus on. I just wanted to explain my absense and tell you I'm not disappearing forever, just until I think things through.

Deciding your future is no fun

Bike dreams

As much as I want to be I will never be one of those cute european women flying around the city on their bikes. This is due to my insane irrational fear of cycling in the city. Give me a bike and a quiet country road completly devoid of cars or people and I'll be off, but if there are cars in the vicinity, I freak out. I don't really know why or when this happened. I had a good start with a little green bike decorated with dinosaurs but when the training wheels came off, everything fell apart. It might be due to my total lack of ability or balance but that hasn't held me back in other aspects of my life. So until I pluck up the courage to go velib-ing around the city, I will just have try and make walking cool.

Glasses Awe

I tried on those glasses the other day. I am currently in Paris and I did my normal trip to Galeries Lafayette and Printemps to gaze at the designers. It's sad to say that I had never seen Maison Martin Margiela's clothes in person before. I really don't understand why the giant department shop in Dublin,Brown Thomas, isn't better stocked. It has the major designers like Prada and Dolce and Gabanna but it's a very small selection. That said the last time I was there they had ONE Balenciga dress and an actual rail of Philip Lim which is a welcome improvement. C'mon the dublin of today is not like the dublin of the 80s. Not like I was around to see it,but i'm told it wasn't the nicest! We should be aspiring to be like all the other big european capitals. We just need to embrace a little culture.

Anyway this was not supposed to be a rant on the state of Dublin, this was supposed to be talking about Printemps and Galeries Lafayette! I started off in Galeries Lafayette as it is the more renowned of the two. It was okay. They had a big Comme Des Garcons rack which was nice and it was listed that they had Louis Goldin, which I was surprised at, but it turned out that she was nowhere to be seen. But the designers I liked were smatterings between more low end ones like Diesel and Guess. Not to say these are bad brands, its just I go to department stores to look at designers in person, not to actually buy anything. Even though I was enamoured by Max Mara socks... I then moved on to Printemps which I thought was alot better. It had a large Burberry and Balenciagca section and I was in actual awe in the Maison Martin Margiela section. It was so great touching the clothes that I reconized from the show and putting the glasses on felt amazing!I also saw real Herve Leger bandage dresses! It was pretty embarrassing the daze I was in when walking around the shop, touching all the clothes. I think I'd probably have a heart attack if I ever went to a show because I would be so amazed!

Brace Face...My Anthem No More

I GOT MY BRACES OFF! After 2 and a bit years of going to the orthodontist's every month, clamping my mouth shut with elastics, and embarrassing situations involving food, I am now free! I cannot stop running my tongue over my teeth! they're ridiculously smooth. The day I got them off I couldn't stop smiling the whole day,and I've pointed it out to everyone I've seen since.I've had good and bad reactions to them, the worst was I look like my mother( no young girl wants to hear that!) and the best was my friend literally screaming as soon as I sat down YOU GOT YOUR BRACES OFF!!!!THEY'RE SO STRAIGHT!

So this all brings me on to a specific point...When I had braces I dreamed of the day when I could experiment with different colours on my lips and now that day has come! After picking up some cheap red lipstick in boots( actually happened to be Jonathan Saunder's line for 17 on sale) I'm going to start my experimentation with red lips! Now I don't want perfect red lips, the kind you'd wear to the crillion ball or some affair of that nature. no what I want are the quintessential cool girl red lips.smeared on with eye make up from last night still on your face, but somehow managing to look fabulous. I'm thinking an amalgamation of Courtney Love and Mary Kate. The aesthetic of Mary Kate yet with the hardcore-ness of Courtney. Not sure where I'll try it out,of course a real cool girl would be wearing it everyday but I have to think to myself,am I cool enough?

I think not

Ali Michael

This month and last Ali Michael spoke out about her battle with eating disorders and how she was told to lose weight while she was 7 stone as 'her legs were too plump'
Too bad that's her career down the drain. Seriously, the fashion industry needs to sort this out.

I wish I looked as cool as her

From where else other then Seoul and Love Clothes And Your Boyhood

Pavement Fashion

Finally there is a decent street style blog for dublin. It didn't make sense not having one as Dublin has really come on in the last couple years, fashion wise. More and more you walk down the street and see people with amazing style and our big fashion shop, Brown Thomas, now stocks Balenciaga.
The blog is called Pavement Fashion. Its just started but it has a really nice mixture of mens and womans fashion, insiders and just randomers on the street. The photography is excellent as well and I think it helps to set it apart from the other street style blogs out there.

I Love Plastic

The other day I went shopping with a male friend of mine. He wanted to get a new jacket so we went into all those 'hip skater' shops looking for one. He ended up not liking anything but I fell in love with this bright pink shiny jacket. Of course I didn't buy it because it was 120 euro which I thought was a bit steep for plastic. Then that night we were at a party and he pointed out this guy wearing one of those plastic-y jackets from Topman asking 'do you like that?' and I said yes. Then he started laughing and asked me why I like plastic so much.I couldn't give him an answer, I just don't know why plastic is so amazing. It might be the childhood association I have with it, you know those old rain jackets you'd have that would smell so heavily of plastic? maybe its the practicality of it? maybe because it comes it varying amounts of transparency. All I know is I think its the coolest thing in the world and I would be a very happy camper if anyone would like to get me these jackets. All pictures from the ebay shop Suzie High

Elliot Smith

I realise I've done a lot of music post recently and not many fashion ones but I will do some more fashion ones again I promise! I'm thinking this will be one of the last of the music ones because who am I kidding? I am not knowledgeable about music! come to think of it I'm hardly knowledgeable about fashion either so maybe I should rethink what I just said...

Anyway I love music but I have zero talent in that area. But I borrowed a Bass of a family friend who was in a fairly prominent Dublin band from back in the day called the pale ( doubt you've heard of them I hadn't either!) So I am attempting to learn Bass but as always I've gotten completely sidetracked! I've been listening to a lot of Elliot smith again and I've decided that I would be satisfied if I learned one of his songs on guitar. I was considering doing Thirteen and I think its not technicality an Elliot smith song. But it was one of the first songs of his that I heard so I'm counting it as one.

haven't decided yet though and I'm pretty sure that I'll pick up the guitar, have one lesson and give up.But if it does happen I might even consider venturing out and learning more songs! crazy I know...

Na na nana na na na na alright alright na na nana naa na na na hey cool!

I went and got my hair cut the other day. I asked the hairdresser for a bit off the length and to do my layers again and I came out looking like Sabrina! which wasn't exactly the look I was going for....

So while I'm waiting for it to grow I started thinking about Sabrina, what a great show. But Melissa Joan Heart's best show was undoubtedly Clarissa explains it all. There was one episode of it that really stuck out in my mind. it was school picture day and Clarissa wanted to stand out from everyone else, but she realised that my trying so hard to stand out she lost her natural individuality. after some intense youtubing, I found the episode in question and subsequently lost it again as I didn't save the link. I'll give the intro instead and keep searching for that episode.

I remember as I kid I always thought Clarissa looked so cool. she was what I aspired to be! Even now if you updated her look she has that effortless layering thing going on that I find so hard to achieve. The way i look at it your either born with that skill or your not, but that said, it doesn't stop me trying to perfect it.Hmmmm since I already have 90s hair I might attempt to bring back a 90s revival. Nostalgia is getting younger and younger these days, I'm only 16 and I'm already nostalgic!

On second thoughts maybe a 90s revival isn't the best idea...

Were Fated to Pretend

I have just come across this amazing band called White Lies. They supported dEUS a very good Belgian rock group at a gig in London. And guess what? It turns out they are also playing The Great Escape festival in Brighton!! Why does God hate me so much! If only I could go...I'm considering going and just leaving my parents a note when I leave? Because I keep finding amazing bands who happen to be playing it! Anyway definitely check out their myspace http://www.myspace.com/whiteliesuk
They wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea though. I think their mellow in a non boring way, slightly reminiscent of Joy Division. I think that might just be the English thing though because they seem very British to me.

Oh to Dave who left the comment about Team Waterpolo your right they are good! I will add them to my list of must sees if I ever make it to Brighton.

I will leave with this song that I am really liking by MGMT. The videos a tad psychedelic for me though!

Its like your living in a bowl..

My current obsession is my lomographic fisheye camera I got for christmas. Its small and light enough I can bring it everywhere and discreet enough I can take a picture without anyone noticing! It has a pretty big cult following. I think especially because its lomography and that has such dedicated nerdy fans. There is a site dedicated to my camera and it pretty much sums up the amazingness of it

"Good-humored, ironic, rock n' roll, and VERY wide Hold on tight. Imagine everything above, below, and around you streaming through your eyes and compacting into a nice and compact little ball. Think about your best friend's nose being vacuum-sucked into your lens, all the while their eyes and forehead are s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d back. Visualize yourself bowled over by the devastating colors that only fine glass can deliver. The world's first honest-to-God Fisheye camera is here and waiting to swim into your life. Open your heart, stretch out your hands, and grease up your fins."

These are some of the first role of film I used when I got the camera. There not amazing or anything but I'm happy with them for my first try. I can't wait to take some fashion pictures with it because I think the effect would be quite nice.

Also its now sold at urban outfitters so I guess that means its cool yeah?

Only 74 Days Left..

The Great Escape is a music festival in Brighton,England for up and coming bands. It is on from the 15th of may to the 17th. The festival has over 200 acts and its in 25 different venues.I will actually cry if I don't get to go to this! The line up is incredible-unlike oxygen. My favourites are

Crystal Castles

Late of the Pier

Lightspeed Champion

The Subways

The Teenagers

The Young Knives

These New Puritians

Vampire Weekend

but this is the whole line up,I don't know a lot of them but I'd say that they would be good. And there will be more as not everyone is confirmed
Last year the artists included Foals,Jack Penate,Gallows,CSS,Does it Offend you, yeah?,Good Shoes,Hadouken,Kate Nash,The Enemy,Scouting for Girls,The Pigeon Detectives and the Klaxons were there I think in 2006.So as lots of the bands who played last year got big this year I'd say that some of these bands will be the next massive bands. I am currently devising a plan so I can go but it is looking unlikely that I will.If you are in a position to go you really really should! but if you do stay away from the singer in Late Of The Pier because he's mines biatches

I Haunt Wizards

I Haunt Wizards are an up and coming band hailing from Brighton,England. They are ridiculously young, two 17 year old boys and one 16 year old female singer. They formed in october 2007 and are already getting a lot of press attention.Their music is of the electronica/Nintendo/disco music genre that is steadily getting bigger.Their music is scheduled to be released through i-tunes and they were just picked for one of the songs of the week on loud and quiet.
So as they are one of my favourite bands at the moment and I foresee them becoming massive soon ,I decided to interview them.Just a quick warning though their answers aren't the run of the mill ones you would get from any band, they reflect their age and personalty which I think is refreshing as you read a lot of interviews where every band sounds the same!

I'll start with a classic..What's your favorite breakfast cereal?

Lucky Charms, Sugar-oh's, Choco Drops, Frosted Sugar Treats, Helens lactose intollerant, so we give her dry toast. what do you taste like tuts? ;]

You all have such amazing hair, especially Dexter how do you do it and how long does it take?

my mum cuts our hair and styles it and everything. bitch got style. i really like your hair hot-rod, spunky

Why I haunt wizards?

we love hocus pocus, for the PC. its kind of a reference to that. also wizard sleeves are pretty cool ... what?

As this is a fashion blog I should ask you something fashion related, any favorite designers?

Babycakes are gooood. your clothes are neat .. but i think they'd look better on my bedroom floor

So the music question, inspiration and influences?

Duran Duran, Willy-S, The Cribs, Crystal Castles, Justice, Armand Van Helden, Lady Sov. Anime helps as an influence, as well as horror films. sexy SEXY ladies such as your self always help us to get it up ... from the drawing board ... what?

Describe your style

female fronted / 80's / disco / wierd indie style I guess?

Saved by the bell or fresh prince of Bel-Air?

Oh, Fresh Prince .. BIG WILLAAAYYYYYYY

How did I haunt wizards come about, the rumour is you formed in October and now you have a record deal and are releasing songs through i-tunes?

sounds like someone did their homework. we just got bored of guitars and metal music. DIY techno is where its at you hot babe ;]

Anything you can't stop listening to at the moment?

the sweet sound of your voice.

What's in store for I haunt wizards in 2008? Playing in Dublin any time soon?

we dont know to be honest, our management will decide all that soon enough. we want to really get playing live a lot more once we have recorded after March

so babe, what you doing this weekend? ....

me?

Sailor Moon

When I was younger I was obsessed with the tv show of the comic sailor moon. I had lots of the merchandise like notebooks but never dolls as I never came across any. When I moved back home to Ireland there wasn't any sailor moon anywhere and I guess it juts never reached here which is a shame because its one of the best kids cartoons.I was reminded of this girl i saw in Tokyo last year when I came across a Tuxedo mask doll online. Tuxedo mask was Sailor Moon's love interest. He was a mild mannered student by day but at night he became Tuxedo Mask and his weapon of choice was roses.

I didn't get a very good picture of her because i was too afraid to ask but you get an idea of what she looked like from these. It might just be me and she might be dressing up as something completely different but she reminds me a lot of Tuxedo Mask. It was hilarious seeing this tiny figure( she was about 4 foot something and looked very young) wandering around the crowed streets of Harajuku dressed in a cape and top hat. Despite her being about a foot smaller then everyone else she defiantly stood out

I'll leave you with the Japanese titles as I couldn't find any good quality English dubbed ones and the English translation to the theme song.Even the credits are amazing!

Fighting evil by moonlight
Winning love by daylight
Never running from a real fight
She is the one named Sailor Moon

She will...never turn her back on a friend
She is... always there to defend
She is...the one on whom we can depend
She is the one named Sailor.....

.... Sailor Venus
.... Sailor Mercury
.... Sailor Mars
..... Sailor Jupiter

With secret powers
All so new to her
She is the one named Sailor Moon

Fighting evil by moonlight
Winning love by daylight
With her Sailor Scouts to help fight
She is the one named Sailor Moon
She is the one named Sailor Moon

She is the one . . . Sailor Moon
